In The Merchant of Venice, Shylock is known as an evil villain. This is because he is known to be obsessed with his money. He is also known to be very harsh towards his daughter. However, he is also the victim. This is because he wasn’t treated right by the Christians. Shylock was telling Antonio about revenge. This makes him look like the bad guy. However, Shylock is human; he is allowed to feel angry. It might not be the right thing to do, but he has the right to feel those feelings. This is because Shylock is a human being. We make mistakes; sin, and much more. At the same time, we got feelings and we also get mistreated. Just like Shylock. Another reason why he is the victim is he lost his wife and his daughter runs away. In conclusion, Shylock is human which makes him a villain and victim.
I believe that riots happen because the protesters get angry, which turns into a riot. Most of the time, people are trying to express their frustration and anger. For example, Starr wanted to riot because she was getting frustrated that she was not being heard. Some people can be doing it for the wrong reasons. However, most of them are rioting for the same reason. It always starts as a peaceful protest, and it turns into a riot. This is because the people protesting are getting tired of not getting answers and not being heard. We all have a voice and protesting is a great way to use it. However, when you’re not being heard, protesters will get frustrated and will start to riot to get answers. It usually gets out of hand because that they are not being heard. I do believe that riots are effective. However, it is unfair for the businesses and homes of people that are being destroyed due to the riot. It also puts people’s lives in danger. For example, Devonte could have got hurt if he still stayed where they were still chanting. Starr and everyone else there could have got hurt as well.
As a person of colour, I do believe that racism still exists. By pretending cultural bias doesn’t exist makes the situation way worse. If we don’t speak on it or take action, then things won’t change. I also believe that it impacts everyone’s life in a negative way. The presentation proves that racism impacts white people as well. When they try to take away something from people of colour, they are also taking something away from themselves. Which does not benefit them at all. So, why do it? For example, when they drained the pool water so that people of colour would not be there. How is that supposed to benefit the white people? They are not gaining anything by being racist.
The whole point of this video is to bring awareness that the policing system is broken. For example, when he was talking about the Warrior Training. It’s crazy how that one guy thinks it is okay to kill people and, that is the wrong mindset to have. I am glad that the city of Minneapolis banned Warrior Training. However, even after they banned the Warrior Training, the union provided them with a Warrior Training program for free. That was a very dumb thing to do because they are encouraging these police officers to the idea of they are “natural born killers.”. On the other hand, take a look at what happened to George Floyd in Minneapolis. I do believe that Hasan proved his point. He just kept speaking facts and kept adding on why the system is broken. Overall the presentation was effective and a great way to bring awareness. source: https://www.axios.com/police-training-george-floyd-2654f96d-fc58-4c59-8d04-e279f50c7107.html The poem that I picked is "Thirsty" by Dionne Brand.
I believe the theme of this poem is that there is always good and bad in a city. For example, at the beginning of the poem, it was saying how the city is beautiful. This demonstrates the good in the city. Later on in the poem, it was talking about how the city is bad. I know this because of when Dionne Brand said “would I have had a different life failing this embrace with broken things, iridescent veins, ecstatic bullets, small cracks in the brain, would I know these particular facts, how a phrase scars a cheek, how water dries love out, this, a thought as casual as any second eviscerates a breath” (Brand, lines 22-28). That part demonstrated how the city can get bad. source: https://www.uoguelph.ca/arts/sets/people/dionne-brand I prefer oral storytelling. When hearing the story you get to feel the emotions that the author is trying to express. You will hear it in the tone of the person who is saying the story. When you read the story yourself the message can be unclear. I am able to have a better understanding of the message when I can hear it. For example, the word “done” can be said in many different tones. When you are reading the story you will have to put the background information and make inferences of what emotion they were feeling. However if the story is orally said to me I do not have to assume anything. This way is more effective in my opinion. This is also a safer way to keep the stories alive. I say this because when you hear it you will feel the words and the emotions. However, when you read the story yourself, it is just words.
